Marketing Analytics
« Back to Glossary Index
At its core, marketing analytics is the practice of measuring, managing, and analysing marketing performance to maximise its effectiveness and optimise return on investment (ROI).
Rather than relying on “gut feelings,” marketing analytics uses data to tell a story about how customers interact with your brand.
The Core Components
To understand marketing analytics, it helps to look at the three main questions it answers:
- What happened? (Descriptive): Tracking metrics like web traffic, click-through rates, and total sales.
- Why did it happen? (Diagnostic): Using data to find patterns—for example, seeing that a specific ad campaign drove a 20% spike in conversions.
- What will happen next? (Predictive): Using historical trends to forecast future sales or customer behaviour.
Why It Matters
Without analytics, marketing is just “throwing spaghetti at the wall.” By leveraging data, businesses can:
- Justify Spend: Prove exactly which channels (social media, email, SEO) are actually making money.
- Understand Customers: Map the journey from the first time someone sees an ad to the moment they buy.
- Optimise in Real-Time: Stop wasting budget on underperforming ads and double down on what works.
